Should the U.S. government limit tuition increases at colleges and universities? Marleen Clapp, a doctorate holder in higher education administration from Boston believes â€Å"In many aspects, a four-year college degree has essentially replaced the high school diploma as the necessary preparation for a career in the modern information economy. Higher-order skills, including critical- and creative-thinking abilities, are often required to compete globally† (Driscoll, Clapp). In this day in age, a high school diploma can only get an individual so far. The importance of college in the United States has been continually growing. While the importance of getting a higher education has grown, college tuition prices have risen as well. Indiana created a Twenty-First Century Scholars program where 7th grade students commit to certain obligations, and if they meet their requirements they receive four free years of tuition at state colleges. Another example is after the 9/11 attacks in New York, the state provides free tuition to people affected by the attacks. Affected as in having a family member who died or was disabled in the attack or a family member who died while serving in the military during the attacks. One last example is in Massachusetts where the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship Program grants four years of free tuition to students who achieve certain scores on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) (Driscoll, Clapp). Overall, advocates of lowering college tuition costs believe to keep up with the changing economy and educational standards, and keep pace with other countries the prices need to be reduced. They also believe the United States values education, and students wanting a higher education for themselves are two more reasons to lower the costs.
